server connectivity
server connectivity
Has been a real problem for me. Trying to look into port forwarding - I recall having to do that with EQ, but the menu is much more complicated now. I have no idea how to setup the port on my Verizon FIOS modem (MI-424-WR). So far, the searches on the p99 forums give snarky responses that don't help. Any one have any suggestions?
Edit: Looks like the devs may have messed it up. This thread exactly describes my issues (http://www.project1999.com/forums/showt ... p?t=125811)
IIRC, the original EQ team had some serious screw ups like this and never admitted it. One day,, they released a patch and everyone's connection issues vanished.

Re: server connectivity
We have occasionally had problems with server select but not recently. There can sometimes be a problem with antivirus software. The devs modified one of the .dll files to help them detect people running more than one instance of EQ at the same time. Some antivirus software thinks this is a problem and quarantines the file, so you might check to see if it is on your quarantine list.
In the beginning I had problems with random crashes while zoning. The fix was to go to the EQ options menu, Display tab, and change "Load Screen" from "Loading Art" to "None".
Some people have played around with the settings for the shortcut pointing to the application, running in compatibility mode for something like Windws XP. I tried this, didn't seem to make much difference, am currently nor running in compatibility mode. I do have the compatibility set to run EQ as an administrator
When you run Ventrilo you need to start Ventrilo first (as Administrator) before starting EQ.
I certainly hope you get your problems sorted out!

Re: server connectivity
Norton will nuke dsetup.dll even if I add an exception in Norton. I have to disable it then launch the BAT file. The problem seems to be on the server end. A recent post suggests it gets bad with over 1100 population. That's consistent with what I saw last night. I had no issues logging in at 5:30 EST. Then I had issues but with some luck could log back in. After 7PM EST, I had trouble just getting past the login screen and I never got a server list. You'd think this would be a priority issue for the devs to solve.

Re: server connectivity
When we first started having this issue I dumped Norton and got AVG. Then checked the quarantine list and also the compatability. Something worked.
Now the game crashes whenever I camp. It makes changing characters frustrating.

Re: server connectivity
I'm confident that the devs are doing everything that they can to solve technical problems. I'm grateful for all the work they have put into setting up this server and keeping it running, apparently just for the love of what they are doing. This beats any of the old school type servers that Sony tried to start.
Menset, I really hope that you can get past the problems that you are having. It is great to see an old face here after all these years and I'm hoping that you can join us in trying to relive some of the good times of days gone by. (Now if Rawlden can just get a real computer ...)

Re: server connectivity
Last night was good. No issues from 6:30 to 11:30pm. I'm convinced it's a server side issue.

Re: server connectivity
P99 is very frustrating to play with the server issues. Do you all have these problems? Just wondering if it's worth trying to troubleshoot more. I know many others share my issues. Last night after freezing on zoning, I saw 50% to 100% packet loss from pings. When I saw good connectivity with 32ms times, I reconnected. However, one time my character selection screen was filled with NPC-like text. Re-logging corrected that issue but made me think these are server issues. I got killed twice in swamp of no hope by higher level mobs near the zone line and wondered if I was going to lose everything on my corpse due to connection issues. Most nights, I freeze while zoning and cannot get back on and just give up.

Re: server connectivity
I'm very sorry to hear that you are still having problems, and hope it doesn't keep you from continuing to play.
I'm not having these problems, will try to keep an eye on my packet loss and ping time readings to see if there is anything unusual. I've had occasional technical difficulties in the past but nothing recently.
Teniny has been getting disconnected every time she camps. This started after a patch the beginning of December.
SamL has sometimes had a problem logging on. I think the symptom was a blank server select screen.
One time we all had trouble when our antivirus software didn't like the dsetup.dll file but we managed to get that straightened out.

Re: server connectivity
I am sorry you are still having this problem - it would drive me crazy. As Cab said, my only issue now is crashing every time I camp. Hope this gets resolved for you.
Re: server connectivity
Teniny I'm pretty sure that you installed the patch that fixed the crash on logout bug but it shouldn't hurt to try and install it again (it is still the latest patch).

Re: server connectivity
I'll be damned, it fixed it! Thanks!
Spoke too soon.

Re: server connectivity
My ping times are consistently in the 40ms range and I have not seen any packet loss.
A few months ago P99 was having problems with denial of service attacks. Whatever measures they took to combat the attacks seems to have worked but I wonder if their defense system sometimes discriminates unfairly against legitimate players.

Re: server connectivity
My ping times are typically around 26ms but I get packet loss at times. It's just random as to when I'll have trouble except that the worst are always during higher population times.
